What led the American Colonists to rebel?

Road to the American Revolution


This unit will cover ten events that led the American Colonists down the road to the American Revolution.


Students will create a "Revolution Scrapbook" of various newspaper articles/genre's in relation to each event.

The following are the specific events and genre for each event:

1. Restrictions on Trade - Newspaper Notice
2. The Great Awakening - Newspaper Advertisement
3. The French and Indian War - Front Page Newspaper Article
4. The Proclamation of 1763 - Newspaper Article
5. The Quartering Act - Letter to the Editor
6. The Stamp Act - Petition Letter
7. The Townshend Acts - Editorial
8. The Boston Massacre - Front Page Newspaper Article
9. The Boston Tea Party - Editorial
10. The Coercive Acts or Intolerable Acts - Letter to the Editor

At the bottom of each entry the student will state how the event led to the American Revolution.
Grade: 8th GradeSubject: History / Language ArtsTime Frame Required: Two - Three Weeks

Technology Integration:

  • Students will utilize the internet in researching each event and the various genre formats along with

obtaining pictures for each entry.
  • Computers, printers and software programs such as word or publisher will be used in order to create the srapbook.

  • Students may chose to create an electronic scrapbook using activinspire or powerpoint instead of a paper scrapbook.

  • Students will also view video clips from various websites to gain information and understanding of the events.
